The Corporate Book Club

Reading-for-Fun can have a serious purpose – as well as being fun.

Why not start a book club among staff?  An hour a month over a lunch break can contribute in surprising ways to corporate well being.

Reading and discussing develop skills that are important in the workplace.  Such skills include:

  • Listening skills
  • Verbal communication skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Negotiation skills
  • Managing a discussion is excellent practice for chairing a committee meeting.
  • Leading a discussion is excellent practice for delivering a report or presentation.
  • Reading and discussion can bring together people in an organisation who might not usually meet, and this can produce cross fertilisation of ideas in unexpectedly productive ways.
  • It can broaden the perspective of staff who otherwise work in restricted professional or technical areas.
  • It can improve morale – an enjoyable break at lunch time can work wonders.

If you already have a staff library, starting a book club is a great way of making full use of this resource.
