Retire with a Book
Retirement is the ideal time to read – particularly if you haven’t had much time for it before.
It is common knowledge that as people get older, they can maintain and improve their health by exercise. It is less well known that this includes mental as well as physical exercise. Health and well-being are also improved by interacting with other people.
Reading-for-Fun can help with both the exercise and the interaction.
Some people are perfectly happy to start their own book club. A retirement village is an ideal place to do this. Others may benefit from a helping hand. Many retirement villages already have a library. A book club can make the most of this resource.

Many of the books suggested in Reading-for-Fun are available from local libraries. Libraries will often buy multiple copies of books for book clubs for a fee that is much less than the cost of the book to individual readers. Most local libraries have a mobile service for borrowers.
Reading-for-Fun not only uses popular books – it also suggests ways that several people can read different books for each session and still have a good discussion.
Some older people are concerned about being able to read a book a month. Most of the books suggested in Reading-for-Fun can be listened to on audio tape or CD-ROM. Many are also available in large print.
