Reading Partnerships

Reading-for-Fun can be used as a resource for connecting people who are isolated by distance, lack of mobility, illness or social disadvantage.

Reading partnerships are just that – two people reading and discussing the same book.

They can be informal – among friends, or formal – part of a volunteer ‘visitors’ program for isolated people.  They can be face to face, or electronic.

Reading partnerships have some advantages over reading alone.  The need to discuss develops the habit of thinking about how the author has gone about writing the story – in other words, critical thinking and analysis skills.  The discussion also develops habits of putting thoughts into words as part of a conversation – in other words, communication skills.

Reading partners can choose any books for discussion.  However Reading-for-Fun is a good introduction because the books in it are popular and accessible, and information about the authors, the books and questions for discussion are already provided.
