Starting your own book club

People join book clubs because they like reading, and they enjoy discussing what they read with other people.  For some people, the book is the most important thing.  For others, a book club is a good reason to meet with other people and have a chat about books - and anything else of interest.

Some people are put off joining book clubs because they don’t read what they think of as ‘highbrow’ books, and they assume that the discussion in a book group will be too literary for them.  Others read widely but aren’t too sure how to go about discussing a book.  And others would enjoy being in a book club, but don’t know where to start finding one to join.

Reading-for-Fun can help all of those who would like to have a go at reading books and discussing them in a group, whether they like Dick Francis or Charles Dickens, Harry Potter or Henry James.  If you don’t have a ready-made group to join, Reading-for-Fun provides notes on how to start your own.

You can read anything you like in your own book club.  However Reading-for-Fun also provides information about a series of reading lists developed specially for new book clubs.

The Reading-for-Fun ‘Starting Your Own Book Club’ guide contains the following sections:

  • What do you want to read?
  • Starting your own club
  • Working in a group
  • Reading for discussion
  • Reading lists
