The notes for each genre or category contain:
•   an overview which gives some background about the genre or category
•   an introduction to a specific theme for discussion
•   some general discussion questions about the books
•   the suggested books
•   information about the suggested authors and their book and discussion questions for the book
•   other books in the genre or category

The overview of each genre is historical, outlining how it has developed up to the present day.  Most genres have their origins in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the way they have developed usually has some relationship to the events, technologies and tastes of the times.

The theme for discussion arises out of subject matter central to the genre, such as the nature of crime, or individual heroism, or views about love.  The introduction to this theme looks briefly at how authors and critics have viewed these issues.  Readers will have their own views on them which they can contribute to the discussion.  The theme for discussion adds to enjoyment of the genre and is particularly useful when members of a group have each read a different book from the genre for discussion in a session.  There are some suggested questions to guide the discussion.  It is useful to read with these questions in mind.
